Report 1
A historical timeline in Chemistry 1935-1995

Due 14 February

This report is the same for everyone except in the time-scale, 5 years each.  Your report is to find out the events going on as well as the chemistry research going on during the same five years. The events can include:

  • Economical: the great depression
  • Historical: wars, assassinations, births
  • Scientific discoveries or inventions eg medicines, electricity, radio, television
  • People: presidents, performers, noble prize winners.
The above are only examples, you may find more that occurred during your particular years.

Your report should be written as follows:
Give an introduction of your five years with background in the above events. Then write about the chemistry advances/discoveries of that time and the scientists who made them. You should elaborate on the latter part of the report. Include if any of those chemistry related discoveries have impact on our lives in any way and how they impact us. If the years were very productive in chemical research then chose two or three that mean the most to you.

The report should be, typed, between 3-4 pages (double space, including references) and 1 inch margin all around. Do not forget to give a nice title on the first page. I don't need a title page. And please make sure you staple your report!  On a separate page draw the timeline in a line format as shown below. You can be creative with you charts if you wish to (eg color coding etc) write your name on the page.

Report 2
Current Report
Due 7th March 2003

You have each been given a recent newspaper or magazine article on a scientific topic.  Read the article and research on it.  Write a three-four page paper (double space, 1" margin , 12 pt Times font) summarizing the article and writing more on it from your research.  Include your references in the paper.  If necessary, give your opinion on the view and/or its possible implications in the society/community.  You will be asked to speak 2-3 minutes on your paper in class.

Lab Report for 25 March
Due 1 April

Each student will get a family of organic compound (e.g. alkane, alcohol etc.).  Write a two page summary as follows for that family:

  • some compounds and their names;

  • how will you explain to someone, who does not know anything about organic chemistry, about that family;

  • choose three or four compounds in the family and find their practical uses in our lives: can be industrial or household uses;

  • any other information you find about that family.

Here are the family assignments:

Steve alkanes Eliya alkenes
Irene alkynes Josh aromatic
Rachel alcohols Baris ethers
Julia aldehydes Rebecca ketones
Jared carboxylic acids Shannon carboxylic esters
Chris amines Shawn haloalkanes

NOTE: Don't forget the references!! Pictures and figures will be good but make sure the word count is for two pages (~450 words)

Report 3
Explore and Element
Due 14 April, 10 am by EMAIL ONLY

There are 109 elements discovered so far. Chose one element that interests you and write the following on it:

  • history: how and when was it discovered? who named it? why does it have the name it does?
  • properties: physical and chemical
  • compounds: does it form a number of compounds? are any compounds more useful than others etc?
  • applications: these can be either of the element itself or its compounds.
  • any other information you will like to include.

The report should be about 4 pages (excluding references), double spaced, 1" margin and 12 point Times font.  The report should be submitted by email by 10am on 14 April (Monday) otherwise it will be marked late.
