Lab Report: Due on 19 September

You have been assigned a topic/material.  Each of the materials is found in our homes.  Write on the following aspects about the material:

1. where is the material found in the homes?

2. what is the history of the material?

3. what industry makes the material.  Is it a popular material i.e. is it profitable?

4. what is the chemistry behind the material?

5. what are the new developments regarding the material?

6. what are the benefits to the new product e.g. lead based paint vs. water based paint, or energy saving bulbs?

7. any interesting facts you might have about the material.

By all means you can expand on the above suggestions.  Your report should be between 2-4 pages long, excluding the references.  See the guidelines for writing reports from the above link.

NOTE: You will have the same topic as your National Chemistry Week topic.  National Chemistry Week is a national chemistry outreach program of the American Chemical Society.  Each year is a different theme, this year it is "Your Home: Its all based on Chemistry". You can find more information at: http://www.chemistry.org/portal/a/c/s/1/acsdisplay.html?DOC=kids%5ccc_kidspage_index.html.  For the NCW (31st Oct) you will be required to develop an activity that you can do with the general community in order to explain to them about your topic, for example why they may want to use energy efficient appliances, or how paints are made, safety in homes etc. If  you have a better suggestion for your topic then please let me know.
